We are not talking about your hair on your head or your dogs fur. We are talking about WILDLIFE!!!! Shedding is going out in the back country and gathering Moose, Elk and Deer antlers (or horns) the wildlife have “shed”.

Antlers are awesome, especially shed ones so you don’t have to kill the animal. Shedding has become a craze here in Utah and we are included among those nuts, the only problem is we stink at it. Please help us out if you know the best ways to Shed or even better the best locations. We have read all sorts of information like getting a scope and searching the terrain first with it. We have heard you look around bushes and trees where the animals may scratch and get tangled. Last year we tried and tried with no luck.

IMG_7672.JPG This year we took the required, free “Antler Gathering Ethic Course” online through the Utah DNR and were ready to go – however – Utah has put a closure now for all shed gathering until April 1, 2017. The closure is designed to reduce stress on the animals who have moved to lower ground because of Utah’s heavy snow fall and this closure will help more of the animals make it through the winter. So, you can’t go out shedding right now but you can go on the DNR website and take the ethics course so you are ready on April 1, 2017 to start gathering. This is a great activity for the family – you get outdoors AND get some exercise at the same time. Here is a copy of what the license looks like-you have to carry this on you when shedding.InkedIMG_5960_LI
