Many of you, even the ones who live in Salt Lake City, have never been to the Great Salt Lake. That is just crazy! Some of the excuses given are that it is stinky, it is desolate and it has lots of bugs. Well sometimes that is true but it still shouldn’t stop you from visiting, especially now when the bugs are nowhere to be seen, it doesn’t stink and the crowds are obsolete.
Look at these views!

As seen above, we were not sure if this was ice or salt even after walking out to it. We think mostly ice but covered in salt. Very fun to get out and explore the edges of the lake. To access Antelope Island you just need to drive 10 minutes across a causeway.
This an interesting part of the Great Salt Lake, because there is no outlet from the Lake the only way it looses water is from evaporation. This makes it very salty, in fact some areas are 8 times as salty as the ocean. That is why is is so fun to come here in the Summer and float, but lets wait until it warms up a little to talk about that.
As you drive across the causeway, Farmington Bay (which is 2 times saltier than the ocean) is on your left and on your right is Gilbert Bay which at times is 6 times saltier than the ocean. As you look at this huge lake it is hard to imagine that at its deepest it is only 33 feet deep. The Visitor Center is very informative and a must stop where you can find out other fun facts about the island and the lake. Make sure to make your way to the far end of the island to the Fielding Garr Ranch, it is only 11 miles from the marina and is fun for all ages to get out and see.
Not only are there antelope & coyote on The Island but count how many buffalo you can spot. Both fake and real they are a treasure to find.
Now with the snow melting you can even hike to Frary Peak which is VERY DIFFICULT in the hot summer months when you have to wear a net on your face because of all the biting gnats. Right now it is beautiful.
