For all you down in St. George for Spring Break or maybe even living down in southern Utah, this is a great short hike that is fun for the whole family. This hike is only about 3.5 miles round trip and the elevation gain is only about 575 feet which is awesome. There are several ways to get to scout cave… The way we went is from Snow Canyon Drive. From Bluff Street in St. George turn onto Snow Canyon Parkway. Stay on the Parkway until you get to Snow Canyon Drive and turn Right. The trailhead is just about 1 mile up on the right side of the street. It is 1 block south of (before) the ranger station, so if you make it to the ranger station you have gone to far – bonus you don’t have to pay a fee to do this hike. There is a parking lot on the west side of Snow Canyon Drive and the trail is directly across the street. As you begin the hike you are in the red sand found all over in this area and you also walk over a large lava bed. About half way to the cave you will drop down into a dried up river bed (usually dry unless it has been raining recently). We found that the trail was well marked to this point and easy to follow. On our way back the river bed was a little confusing so as you hike up and cross the river bed especially the first time keep note of where you are so it will be easier on the way back to find the right way. We used the Alltrails app which would be very helpful to just retrace your route. This trail now heads up towards the cave and you can see it up on the ridge. It is a slow grade and the hardest part of the hike are the “stairs”. Make sure to bring along a lunch and plenty of water so you can enjoy the beautiful view of the entire valley in the wonderful shade of the cave. The way back to your car is the easy part of the hike enjoy the breeze that is often found on this hike.
